Veterans Competitions

התאחדות ישראלית לכדורת דשא

Israel bowlers rounded off their year's programme with the conclusion of the annual novices and veterans competitions at the Kiryat Ono club.

The Novices caters for newcomers to the game with less than three years playing experience, and covers a limitless age group from early teens till the 90's.

The men's novices final was an all Ramat Hasharon affair, between Kobi Hadar and Yaakov Dayan, both in their second year of bowling. With accurate bowling from both newcomers, the game was level-pegged throughout, each players alternatively inching ahead. After 13 ends the score was level a  9-all, Dayan then leading 12-9 and then again 15-14 at the 20th end. But in the next head Hadar scored a counting three to lead 17-15 and then ended the game with a full-house count of four, for a well played 21-15 game.

With cool nerve and steady control the 58 year old Hadar showed the ambition to emulate his five year younger brother Zvika ,Israel's present Masters champion.

The women novices was  a Kiryat Ono final with Irene Aharonov up against her club mate Chana Rothbart. The latter after  trailing 10-15 went ahead to lead 16-14, but in the following three ends her opponent scored three, one and two to lead 20-16. Rothbart twice saved game with last bowl deliveries, but it was Aharonov who found the winning single shot to win 21-18. For the Kiryat Ono's club it was a second successive year of claiming the women's novices title.

In the men's veterans for players older than 65, it was another Kiryat Ono player, Yehuda Amitai who was against Haifa's Rudi Stavisky. The Kiryat Ono player who way back in 2002 had been a novice's runner-up, won comfortably 21-9.
